Limón Blues

Limón blues is a collection of photos of Limón, a town in eastern Costa Rica. It was inspired by Anacristina Rossi's novel "Limón Blues": a story about the cultural and political emancipation of a Jamaican community sent to work in the region's banana plantations.

Following a period of isolation and oppression by exploitive corporations, Limón experienced a political and cultural upheave in the mid-1900s. It became a vibrant capital during Marvin Garvin's pan-African movement, which reunited the Jamaican diaspora across Central America and helped revindicate their position in society.

Today, the hope and pride that Limón once had appear to have died down and tamed. This collection represents a town that has withdrawn into itself to cope with its disillusionment.
